Flying with Cebu Pacific

cebu pacificCebu Pacific

Once you are in the Philippines you will be spoilt with beach destinations. Mostly the only way to get to these places is by air and the  biggest domestic service is Cebu Pacific. They offer competitive fares but do not expect flights to be trouble-free, especially when flying from the Manila hub. Congested airports and airspace make it a very difficult journey.

Air companies here do not have the best-trained staff and this leads to huge frustrations and tempers from the international travelers.
Customer service is poor and customer complaints, mostly are ignored.
Take a look at some of the customer complaints online about Cebu Pacific.

I have a booking for our helper on Cebu Pacific from Singapore to Davao via Manila for Nov. 7, 2015. I wanted to change the Manila to Davao segment of the flight and move it by a week. There is a manage booking function in the Cebu Pacific website and I was able to make the change. Unfortunately, after I have made the change and paid additional $120.99, the Singapore to Manila segment was canceled and only the Manila to Davao was retained. There was no prompt given before making the payment that the original booking of SIN-MLA-DVO will be canceled by the change.

When I called the customer service, that’s when I learned that their website doesn’t have that capability of rebooking a multi-city flight. I asked if I can reinstate the old booking. It can be done but I have again to pay $194 as a penalty. I asked if there is a way they could help reduce the penalty to reinstate the original booking. None was given. The customer service has no power to make or given any accommodations and only gives an apology that I felt is really not sincere.

The other thing I want to highlight is the website usage. You have to really be detailed in reviewing the items you pay for, from the baggage allowance, seat, food, and insurance. For seat allocation, the website will default a seat for you but at a cost. The option to remove a seat allocation, the text itself, has a gray color. If you missed it, you will be a charge for the seat. You have to make sure to unselect each seat allocation if you have multiple flights. The website also defaults a food choice for you. But this time, the text to change the meal is highlighted in blue. so you can easily notice this and change or remove the food item. Insurance is again preselected for you.

There are two ways to manage this. One is to click “No thanks” which is in light gray. The other is to choose “Manage by guest” which is in blue. Then you have to make sure if there are more than one in your booking. You have to check/review for each passenger. At the end, you just need to review the whole booking again to make sure that what you are paying for is what you need or choose. The experience of using the website is stressful. I always feel that if you are not careful, you will end up paying for something that you may probably not choose if you have been informed clearly about it. The whole experience with Cebu Pacific, even the recent flights I took, are not satisfactory of a regional airline whose passenger volume has increased tremendously over the years.

Driving in Chaos in Manila

No accidents, no road rage - no matter how badly someone cut you off nobody waves a finger or a hand, or gives so much as a look. Cars do not have dents/scratches on them

Ever been surprised by an apprehending traffic officer with a violation you haven’t heard of? Every motorist, at least once in his lifetime has been apprehended by a traffic officer. Sometimes, you are surprised by the apprehending officer with a “new” or improvised traffic violation, or at times it might be something real that you just haven’t heard of. Knowing the violations might save you money and trouble.

There are also some instances of wrong apprehensions, like the very popular ‘driving without license’ violation. Do not allow the apprehending officer to get away with this, when you really have a license but did not bring it, this would only mean a failure to carry a driver’s license when operating motor vehicle with a fine of 150 pesos compared to 750 pesos for driving without license.

Be calm and polite when confronted by a traffic officer. Shouting or yelling at them can also get you in trouble. There is a violation called “Arrogance or discourtesy towards a traffic officer” which will incur a 150 peso fine.

If you are driving a car be sure to bring along with you your spare tire, as failure to do so will also result in a violation with a fine of 150 pesos.

Bring along your early warning device or buy one if you don’t have one yet. This will save you 100 bucks and another 300 pesos if your car needs a little roadside repairs.

Last but not least, please do remember to fasten your safety belts or be ready to pay 300 or even a 1000 pesos fine. Don’t forget that using your mobile phone, be it calling, answering a call, or texting is also a violation of the law unless you have a hands free kit installed. Texting is still not permitted even with the installation of a hands free kit since texting cannot be done hands free.

Listed below are the traffic violations with corresponding penalties and subject of violation.

Manila Driving

First off – traffic jams 24/7, Secondly, the public learns how to deal with the constant traffic….by MAKING it move – at ALL costs.

3 lanes become 5. Driving on the opposing lanes.

Using shoulders. every inch of road used. Road lanes and traffic lights were a mere serving suggestion and if you stopped at a red, and no traffic was coming on the perpendicular lanes, you get HONKED for NOT running the red light.

Horns are used like gas pedals, people honk just to let you know they are coming beside you, or behind you, anytime they CAN honk – they do.

And people cut each other off, forcing you into shoulders and you just have to deal with it.

And it’s like this ALL the time – every car mere inches from each other – you can literally stick your arm out the window and touch the other cars. You begin to have a real appreciation for the way everyone in N. America obediently obeys signs, lights and lanes, and keeps our space.

But in Manila, they drive that way, because that’s the only way the traffic will move, and they’ve adapted so well to the conditions that everything works like clockwork and I don’t know what more to say except – traffic jams MOVE!!!

* pedestrians literally run and dodge cars, cars do not slow down for pedestrians

* even the dogs have gotten quite skilled at crossing streets and dodging cars.

No accidents, no road rage – no matter how badly someone cut you off nobody waves a finger or a hand, or gives so much as a look. Cars do not have dents/scratches on them. People have learned to adapt perfectly to a much heightened state of road manner and alertness, that they have become really good at it.
